Gumroad — 10% + $0.50, Discover’s 30%, and when merchant-of-record beats a UPI store
Gumroad lets anyone sell digital products, memberships, and courses with no monthly fee. You pay a percentage per sale. Since 2025 Gumroad has positioned itself as the merchant of record for tax.

Gumroad is the opposite of Stan Store’s rent model. Official pricing is a sentence: 10% + $0.50 per direct sale, 30% if the buyer came through Gumroad Discover, no monthly fee. Since 1 January 2025 Gumroad has also marketed itself as merchant of record — they collect and remit sales tax/VAT in the places they have obligations so you are not wiring Stripe Tax at 11 p.m.
That combination — percentage rent + tax adult in the room — is why Gumroad still wins “just sell the ZIP” conversations worldwide. It is also why it loses “my buyers only have UPI” conversations in India.
This guide quotes gumroad.com/pricing for fees, then draws a hard line between a global digital stall and SuperKreator’s Cashfree store.
What is Gumroad?
Gumroad is a digital commerce platform. You get a profile, product pages, memberships, and payouts. Gumroad is the seller of record in their MoR era: the customer’s tax invoice is their problem more than yours, within the regions they support.
It is famous among designers, writers, indie hackers, and course-lite teachers. It is not famous for Instagram comment funnels or Indian GST storefronts.
Discover is Gumroad’s marketplace. That 30% fee is a customer-acquisition tax for demand Gumroad brought you. Direct links stay on the 10% + $0.50 schedule.
How does Gumroad work?
Create a product, set a price (pay-what-you-want is a Gumroad cultural feature), share the URL. Gumroad hosts the file, takes the fee, and pays you out on their schedule (bank or PayPal; country-dependent — read current payout docs).
There is no “Starter vs Pro” that lowers the 10%. Official pricing FAQ: they make money when you do. The trade is higher take-rate, zero subscription.
Physical goods are out of scope. Their pricing page points to a prohibited list for the rest (no gambling, no adult, etc.). Memberships and “SaaS-like” digital subscriptions are in scope per the same page.
Key features of Gumroad
- Product pages and a creator profile
- Memberships / subscriptions
- Discover marketplace (30% all-in on those orders, per Gumroad)
- Merchant of record tax collection (from Jan 2025 per Gumroad)
- No monthly SaaS fee
- Workflows that prefer share a link, not build a branded India shop
Missing on purpose: UPI as a first-class India rail, Instagram AutoDM, a Metricool calendar, Graphy DRM apps.
Who is Gumroad best for?
Makers with international demand, people who hate monthly software, and anyone who has been burned by VAT. Also good as a second checkout for a product you already sell locally.
Bad as the only checkout if 80% of revenue is Indian UPI, or if you needed a bio operating system.
Gumroad pricing
From Gumroad’s official pricing page:
| Sale type | Gumroad’s published fee |
|---|---|
| Direct (profile, your links) | 10% + $0.50 per transaction |
| Discover marketplace | 30% per transaction |
| Monthly subscription to Gumroad | None |
Gumroad’s page emphasizes MoR tax handling rather than itemizing Stripe’s 2.9% + $0.30. Third-party fee explainers still budget card processing on top for some direct sales. Read your own Gumroad receipts. If Gumroad’s MoR wrap includes processing in the 10% + $0.50, your dashboard will show it. Do not double-count from a 2024 blog.
Refunds: multiple independent explainers note Gumroad does not return its fee on refunds. Confirm in current terms if that P&L line matters.
Small-ticket pain is mathematical: $0.50 flat on a $3 preset is brutal; on a $99 pack it is noise.
Advantages of Gumroad
- No monthly fee. Silence is cheap.
- Discover can send strangers (at 30%).
- Merchant-of-record tax is a genuine operational win for global sellers.
- Cultural default in design/indie circles — less explaining.
- Memberships without Kajabi.
Limitations of Gumroad
- Percentage forever. At scale, $29/month Stan or a 0%-fee Plus plan can win.
- $0.50 flat hurts cheap SKUs.
- Not UPI-native. Indian conversion will lag a Cashfree shop.
- Not a bio/AutoDM/studio. You will still want SuperKreator, Linktree, or ManyChat around it.
- Payout geography varies. Confirm India payouts before you promise a date.
Gumroad alternatives
- SuperKreator — INR store, UPI, bio attached.
- Stan Store — monthly fee, 0% platform take.
- Beacons — 9% then 0% at Plus, plus email.
- Lemon Squeezy / Polar — other MoR options (not reviewed here; same aisle as Gumroad).
Gumroad vs SuperKreator
Gumroad wins MoR tax, zero monthly, Discover, global maker culture, membership billing without an India company setup.
SuperKreator wins UPI, a branded username on an India product, Instagram-adjacent selling, and not converting every buyer through a US-flavored checkout.
Neither should pretend to be the other. Dual-stack is the grown-up India + export strategy.
When should you choose Gumroad?
Choose Gumroad when tax and global cards are the hard part, when you do not want a monthly bill, and when Discover is a channel you actually want (and will pay 30% for).
When should you consider SuperKreator?
Consider SuperKreator when the buyer is on a phone in India with UPI, when the bio should be the shop, and when Gumroad would only be a conversion leak. Export SKUs can stay on Gumroad the same week.
Comparison
A global percentage stall versus an India store. Tax and UPI do not cancel out — they stack or they split by audience.
| Dimension | Gumroad | SuperKreator |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | 10% + $0.50 direct; 30% Discover; $0/month | Free to start; processor fees; no published % take |
| Tax / merchant of record | Gumroad MoR from 2025 (their positioning) Stronger here | You + Cashfree; not a Gumroad-style global MoR |
| India UPI checkout | Not the product | Cashfree UPI, cards, net banking Stronger here |
| Bio + AutoDM + studio | No | Bio/store, AutoDM, and LIVE available in the dashboard Stronger here |
| Marketplace demand | Discover, at 30% Stronger here | No public marketplace |
| Best for | Global digital goods and tax-sensitive sellers | Indian creators selling from Instagram/YouTube |
Conclusion
Keep Gumroad for export audiences, memberships that need their tax engine, and products you want sitting on a marketplace (Discover) even at 30%. Use SuperKreator for the India-facing bio and UPI SKUs.
Many creators should run both: Gumroad for the world, SuperKreator (or Superprofile) for the motherland. That is not indecision. That is two payment networks.
